Pre-order the National Youth Science Day experiment kit

By Sarah Simpson

Want to get a head start planning your Lights On Afterschool event for this October?

The 2014 National Youth Science Day Experiment, Rockets to the Rescue!, is now available for pre-order at a discounted price of $21.95. Pre-ordered kits will be shipped beginning in mid July, at which time the price will go up to $23.95. Make sure to take full advantage of this discounted rate!

The University of Arizona developed the 2014 National Youth Science Day Experiment: Rockets to the Rescue!. This year, youth will be tasked with one mission: in light of the recent natural disasters such as Typhoon Haiyan, National 4-H Council is asking youth to design and build an aerodynamic food transportation device that can deliver a payload of nutritious food to disaster victims. Youth will learn engineering concepts, develop math skills, learn about nutrition, and help solve a relevant global issue.

Pre-order yours here!

Lights On Afterschool poster deadline extended!

By Sarah Simpson

We’ve gotten some great submissions for this year’s Lights On Afterschool poster, but we think there’s even more afterschool talent out there—and we want to see it!  That’s why we’re extending the poster deadline to Monday, June 9, 2014.

This contest is a great opportunity for an afterschool program to gain national recognition for the great enrichment opportunities it offers, since the young artist’s program will be credited on the poster, too!

  • The winning design will be printed on tens of thousands of posters
  • The design will be displayed at thousands of Lights On Afterschool celebrations across the country
  • The winning artist will be featured on our website, blog and Afterschool Storybook

See contest details and submission guidelines.

We can't wait to see what you come up with!

Designers wanted for 2014 Lights On Afterschool poster!

By Shaun Gray

Calling all artists!  The 2014 Lights On Afterschool poster contest is now officially underway!  Youth participants in afterschool programs nationwide are encouraged to submit artwork that celebrates afterschool programs and conveys the message of the importance of keeping the lights on afterschool.

The winning poster design will be printed on tens of thousands of posters sent to Lights On Afterschool celebrations across the country, not to mention that the winning artist will be featured on our website, blog and Afterschool Storybook!  The Lights On Afterschool poster contest is a great opportunity for afterschool programs to gain national recognition for the great enrichment opportunities they offer since the winning submission will also have the afterschool program name printed on the poster.

The deadline for submissions is June 2, 2014Contest details and submission guidelines are available for download now.  Keep in mind that the winning artwork will need to be scanned to become a digital image, so avoid using textures or raised materials.  We love bright colors that jump off the poster so materials that won’t smear or rub off—like markers, paint and pens—often work better than crayons, watercolors or chalk.  Feel free to get your future graphic designers and computer programmers involved by encouraging them to submit their artwork in the digital form.  Be creative as possible!

Congrats to the Bright House Networks photo contest winners!

By Sarah Simpson

The votes are in!

More than 11,000 votes were cast in this year’s Lights On Afterschool Facebook photo contest, and we think you did a great job picking some awesome winning photos.  We were really impressed with the quality of photos we received this year and amazed at your ability to activate your networks and get out the vote—it was great to see entire communities band together to support their local programs!

There were lots of ways to win this year.  The top vote-getter from Bright House Networks’ service area received $2,000.  The next top three photos (from anywhere) each won $1,000.  We even teamed up with five state afterschool networks to offer prizes for the top vote-getter in their state!

Vote for your favorite afterschool photo

By Sarah Simpson

The photos are in, and it’s time to cast your vote!

Throughout the month of October, more than 150 photos were entered into the Lights On Afterschool photo contest and we’re letting Facebook users decide which programs will shine the brightest. Up to three programs are eligible to win $1000 in cash, and one program in a Bright House Networks service area can win up to $2000.

We've also teamed up with some of our statewide afterschool network partners to offer additional prizes to local programs in their state.

To help your program win, all you have to do is vote for their photo on Facebook. You can only vote for a single photo once per day, but come back the following day to vote again! Between Nov. 1-15, each Facebook user can cast up to 15 votes per photo by voting every day. Make sure to encourage parents, program staff, community members and friends to help your program win by voting often.

48 governors proclaim Oct. 17 Lights On Afterschool Day!

By Sarah Simpson

Throughout the month of October, thousands of afterschool programs rallied their communities to build support for the afterschool programs that keep kids safe, inspire learning and help working families.

And governors across the country got in on the action, too! In all, 48 governors recognized Lights On Afterschool—some proclaimed Oct. 17 as Lights On Afterschool Day in their state, others issued public letters of support and recognition of the good work being done in the state to support students and working families during the hours after school.

We want to extend a special thank you to all of the governors who took the time to help make Lights On Afterschool 2013 such a special event. Here’s the list of governors who proclaimed Oct. 17 to be Lights On Afterschool Day in their state; different actions are noted beside their name. Be sure to tweet them to say thanks!
